Why are my property taxes keep increasing eventhough my assessed value drops? My Tax bill is high, Illinois American water is high and all other amenities in Will County are high. When will this stop..When will the county start lowering their rates. I had my income decrease more than half these past 3 years and why doesnt the county.
Being in the realestate business, I tell people not to buy a home in will county because the taxes are just over the top. Comparing to Dupage and Cook Counties I just dont see why Will County is so High.
Mr. Orozco,
Thank you for your question. Our office does not calculate tax bills, nor do we set the tax rates. For questions about your tax bill, please contact the Will County Supervisor of Assessment at 815-740-4648.
That is a good question as I asked them myself and all I get is a runaround by all the departments and referal to other departments which refer me back to the original department that I asked. I believe we need a complete change in our county government so keep asking the questions as I do
Why are our tax bills being sent out so late in the year? You are only giving us a month to make sure we have enough money to pay our tax bill on time. I have lived in will county for 7 years now, and in past years we would get our bill at the end of March.
Jessica,
Our office historically mails real estate tax bills at the beginning of May. Last year, for example, we mailed the bills on May 1, 2012. Could you be referring to Mobile Home Tax Bills? We mail those bills each year on or around March 1st.
State law sets the date we mail both sets of bills, and to my knowledge, we have not missed our dates.
why can’t you publish tax rates and sample calculations in advance of issuing bills? And please don’t refer me to another site. You are the people who issue the bills so you have all of the information; presumably way in advance of mailing out anything.
While you may not miss any statutory deadlines, it would be nice to see you give your constituents access to information necessary to budget their tax obligations more than 31 days prior to reqquired payment.
The 2011 Levy Information is available live as of Friday night on http://www.WillCountyTaxBill.com.
Why is there a convenience fee for transferring the money directly from a checking account? One would think this would actually cost less to the county since it’s all computerized.
The convenience fees for ACH are set by banks, and are quite common in the banking industry. We’ve negotiated a lower fee for taxpayers this year ($1.25 from $1.50 last year). Still, a flat fee is less than the percentage fee charged by credit cards. Online Bill Pay, if you have that service, has no convenience fee.
If I use ACH will my checking account be debited on the tax due date or when I sign up? You do not indicate this information.
Also, what will happen in you get a check for my taxes on or before the due date, but the detachable portion from the tax bill is not included? This method will save me money by not having to purchase a stamp for both payments and an envelope for the second payment.
Ed,
The bank will withdraw the funds when you initiate the ACH. You cannot set an ACH for a future date using our system.
As for making two payments at once, you can mail one check to cover both installments. We ask that you include both coupons because it helps our staff process the payments correctly.
If I pay my taxes in person using a credit card , is there a fee ? What is the fee? Do you accept Discover Card?
Wyn,
When you come to our office and want to use a credit card, we direct you to our Public Access Terminals. Our terminals take you through the same payment process you get online. There is a convenience fee (the same as online).
The one exception is Discover Card. Our tellers will take the card in our office, and there is a convenience fee for those transactions as well.
When I called the Will County Tax Collector office and asked if I can discuss the hugely elevated tax bill that I just received, I was advised that although the value of my house was not reassessed for 3 years (!) and hopefully will be reassessed this coming August (after the tax will have been paid), it is not this office that can have any impact on the tax value. It’s the “tax bodies” (such as the school district, the library etc.) that define the structure and the size of our tax bills. Isn’t it strange, to say the least, that we find out about their grossly elevated budgets that take a lot of money from our pockets just a month before we have to pay for their growing needs? I see at least two aspects here:
1. The value of my house continues to progressively drop but the Office is not rushing to help me with reassessing its declined value but rather procrastinates for 3 years so I pay more. In addition, to make sure that I pay more, they only give me 30 days to collect the money and then, sometime later I will have a narrow time window to appeal. The hard working citizens should be given more respect. The tax rates could have been lowered if the businesses such as The Bolingbrook Promenade did not get tax relief at our expense. And also, not reassessing the home values for 3 years at the time when the economy sharply drops is simply not fair (if not illegal).
2. The impact of the elevated budgets of the “tax bodies” on our tax bills should be explained to the people way before they have to empty their pockets. I was told that I could go to the board meetings and participate in discussion of the budgets and express my protest. Huh? I think it’s them, if they want my money, should come to me, explain how it will affect my family budget and ask my approval. It can be done, for instance, on the Dupagetownship.com beforehand. Our taxes have grown by 50% since we bought the house 9 years ago while the value of the house has dropped by 50%. Taxes are supposed to reflect the house values. Who is responsible for this discrepancy?
it makes absolutely no sense to pay huge taxes when your property’s value has dropped like 40%. Not to many counties in the country is like Will’s county —seems like it just keep ripping its people off on these nonsense assessments!! the foreclosure rate in will county’s is horrendously high–no surprise there, since who can afford to pay their mortgage and these tax rates?! unbelievable!!
