Last year, federal regulators approved the purchase of the EJ&E Railroad by Canadian National. For CNI, the purchase was part of a strategy to reduce congestion in Chicago by moving rail traffic through Chicago’s suburbs—including a significant portion of Will County.

While it is difficult to imagine a benefit to waiting at a railroad crossing, we believe we’ve found one: the amount of tax Canadian National pays on the tracks it owns in Will County increased by 417%.

Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railroad
2008 Railroad Tax $144,089.42
2009 Railroad Tax $744,796.02

$600,706.60 (416.9%)

With more than two-thirds of the levy slated for local school districts, you can conclude that the bulk of the increase in Canadian National’s tax levy will benefit school districts across the county.
